Introduction of a Ravenclaw

My name is Victoria, but I go by Tori. I am a senior, and I graduate in May 2018.  I am studying Business: Human Resources Management, and the Price College of Business is actually stopping this program after students graduate in May 2018. So, those graduating in May are the last ones to graduate with a degree in Business Human Resource Management from OU. It is sad to know the program is no longer going to be offered because I really have enjoyed it so far, but it is kind of cool to know that I will be one of the last ones to graduate with this degree from OU.

My biggest accomplishment was balancing school, work, and activities. I enjoy staying busy and getting involved on campus and in the community. I work at a department of OU, The Center for Teaching Excellence, as a student office assistant. I have held my position there for over 2 years. Also, I participate in a few other organizations on and off campus.

Over Christmas break I spent a lot of time with my family. I have a large family, and the majority of my family members live in Oklahoma. On Christmas day my family and I left for Universal Studios in Orlando Florida. It was a blast, but the best part was when we went to Harry Potter World. One thing to know about me is that I love Harry Potter. I own every movie and watch them way too often. It was the coolest experience ever. I went to many places in Harry Potter World: Hogsmead, Diagon Alley, Hogwarts, Platform 9 ¾, and I even got to eat lunch and drink butterbeer at The Three Broomsticks. If you haven’t read or seen the Harry Potter series I recommend you do so, and then travel to Harry Potter World because the experience is more enjoyable when you can appreciate everything there. (Also, if you are a fan of Harry Potter you should take the test on Pottermore to find out what house the sorting hat places you in. I'm a Ravenclaw!)

Anyways...that is just a little about me. I hope you enjoyed learning about me and my life! :)

  1. Wow, Tori, I am so surprised at Price phasing out Human Resources Management. To me, that seems like one of the most important aspects of any business... and one of the most fascinating things to study too! One of the journals that is the most helpful to me as a teacher is actually the Harvard Business Review. I actually learn more from that than from traditional educational journals. Human resources and maximizing human potential: HBR has so many articles and reports exploring that theme, which is a great theme for education too.

And how great that you work at CTE: Keegan, John and Adam are my online colleagues and I am learning things from them all the time. Maybe you can imagine a kind of CTE office for Hogwarts! Magical CTE! There are lots of stories about magic that have a lot in common with modern technology, so I bet if you explore the theme of magic in stories for this class, you will get all kinds of great storytelling ideas about magic-as-tech / tech-as-magic. And please say hi to the CTE crew from me! :-)

  2. Hey Tori! I'm honestly pretty surprised they're phasing out your major, unless they're doing the thing where they replace it with a super similar major or something(college is weird). It's got to be super cool to be graduating. As a sophomore I'm already feeling the senioritis, so I can't imagine what it'll be like down the road! I've only ever been to Universal California, but I've heard so many cool things about it! So jealous of the Harry Potter world part as well! I haven't checked yet, but I hope your favorite place post is about that! Can't wait to see what you write; hopefully there will be a few stories with extra witchcraft and wizardry!

  3. As a fellow Ravenclaw, I was hyped when I saw your post title. I haven't been to the Wizarding World in Orlando since they opened the second half (I went a few months after it opened), but I'll have to go see it again with all the new attractions! And congrats on graduation in May. I'm a fellow senior so I am simultaneously excited and terrified at the thought of graduating.

  4. Oh my gosh! I love Harry Potter. I even have a tattoo on my forearm that says "All was well." from the last sentence of the last book. I went to Universal Studios the summer of like... 2013? I don't remember exactly, but it was before they added Diagon Alley. Hogsmeade was so cool though! I also went to the Three Broomsticks. Overall, that was an awesome time. It's always fun to find another person who is also interested in Harry Potter. Oh, I'm a Ravenclaw who sort of wishes she was a Slytherin!

  5. Hey Tori!

That is crazy that this is the last semester that they will offer that degree. It seems like that is such a popular college! I am happy for you that you are able to finish it out and graduate with that degree. I also love Harry Potter. I have seen all of the movies and I have made it halfway through the book series (Im not a big reader). But I would absolutely love to go to Universal Studios and see Harry Potter World. I think that would be super fun!

  6. Hi, Tori!

I'm a proud Hufflepuff, but I like to think I could make it as a Ravenclaw! I have a few suggestions/questions based on your love for Harry Potter. A few summers ago, I reread the series alongside Muggle Hustle. It started off as the Twitter account of a 26 year-old man live-tweeting his reactions to reading Harry Potter for the first time. He's hilarious, and ended up with his own website, and a spin-off where he live-tweeted The Hunger Games. If you're the type of person who enjoys rereading your favorites, Muggle Hustle is a great way to see Harry Potter in a new light!

I also wanted to ask if you've ever read Rowling's The Casual Vacancy? It's one of my personal favorites, but I know a lot of Harry Potter fans have mixed feelings about it!

  7. Hey Tori! I will agree with you that Harry Potter world is awesome! I went there a couple of years ago and it was one of the coolest things I have ever experienced. Especially the new harry potter rollercoaster that is like part rollercoaster part interactive. Other than that though, I am not really a Harry Potter fan. I bet you are excited to be graduating in May. I hope you have a great last semester!

  8. Nice to meet you, Tori, if only through text.

That sounds really neat - I can't imagine being one of the last people to get a certain degree from OU. I've done two internships, and Business Human Resource Management seems really important there (or in just about any workplace, to be honest), so I'm sure you'll do great work wherever you go!

You got to go to Harry Potter World? Lucky! Although from the sound of it, you're way more of a fan than I am. (My more dedicated HP-fan friends are horrified by me, because I've always landed somewhere between Slytherin and Ravenclaw, and call myself a "Slytherclaw" because of it.)

Looking forward to maybe seeing some Harry Potter in your writing!

  9. Tori,

Sad to hear about the HR Management phase out... certainly a bummer and a loss for Price. I've also heard a couple people mention the Center for Teaching Excellence, but I'm interested in what you all do. As for your love of Harry Potter, I'd have to say that it is certainly well-placed... I hope to get to go The Wizarding World one day and live out that childhood fantasy.

  10. Oh my gosh! I’m saving up to go to Wizarding World too!! It’s a bucket list dream for me...or should I say, a “Buckbeak List”? 🤓

Glad to meet a fellow Ravenclaw. I’m on the borderlands between Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw so I sometimes get called a “Ravenpuff” or “Huffleclaw” by my friends.

  11. Hi Tori, I did not know you were in this class! We have gone to school together for what like 18 years now and I had no idea you were such a big harry potter fan. It is sad that OU is shutting down your program, but kind of cool at the same time that you will be the last to get that degree!

  12. Hi Tori, it's sad to see that your major program is not longer being offered at OU. Like you said though, it's cool that you are one of the final people to earn that degree here! I am personally not an avid fan of Harry Potter, however my roommates is practically obsessed. She, too, has visited the Harry Potter park at Disney World and has only spoken good things about it.

  13. Hi Tori! It seems like there are lots of Harry Potter fans in this class! I went to HP world at Disney and loved it too. I had never heard of a HR Management major in the first place, but that's a bummer it was taken away. Luckily OU let's students make their own majors with the help of advisors, so that's always an option! Good luck this semester!

  14. Hi Tori!

There are definitely a lot of Harry Potter fans in this class including myself! I went to Harry Potter World a few years back and had a blast! Its really cool and sad that you will be the last set of people to graduate with your major. Was there a reason they are not offering it anymore? It seems like a shame because you seemed to enjoy it! I look forward to reading your stories and good luck with the rest of the semester!

  15. Hi Tori! I love Harry Potter too, and not gonna lie I'm pretty jealous that you got to go to Harry Potter world over the break. I'm a Slytherin. Did you take the patronus test on Pottermore? It sucks that they're getting rid of your major, since you liked it so much, but it's kind of cool that you get to be one of the last ones to graduate with that major. Do you know what they're doing about students who were in that major but not graduating this May?

  16. Hi Tori! It's both cool and so sad that your major is disappearing. I wonder why they’re getting rid of it. Balancing school, work, and extracurriculars really is an underappreciated accomplishment, as it can definitely be tough sometimes. I’m so jealous that you’ve been to Harry Potter World! The only time I went to Orlando I was 7, so I was too short to ride anything at Disney and Harry Potter World didn’t exist yet, haha. Maybe one day I’ll make it back and visit!

  17. Hey Tori! I'm a senior too, so I understand that this is a weird time. Doesn't the semester feel like it's flying by? Crazy to think that you'll be one of the last in your major, I wonder why they'd be getting rid of it. I also grew up on harry potter, but I think every time I take one of those quizzes it sorts me into a different house. I'd think I'd be a Ravenclaw though!

  18. Hi Tori! It's cool that you are going to be one of the last people getting your degree from OU in your major. While that is disappointing that OU will no longer offer that degree, its encouraging knowing you have a one of a kind degree now! I'm also a big fan of Harry Potter! While I love the movies, I've never had the time or patience really to read the books, but I've heard great things. I'm also super jealous you went to Harry Potter World, that's definitely something on my bucket list!

  19. Hey Tori,

That’s crazy that the Human Resources Management program is being stopped! I feel like that is a very important aspect of any business, although I guess OU may be having to cut various things to due to the budget. And that’s cool that you work for CTE! My Capstone group created a website and database for managing attendance and available classes to shadow last semester! Good luck on the rest of the semester!

  20. Hey Tori!

I LOVE HARRY POTTER, so I was definitely interested in reading your introduction as soon as I saw your title! I went to the Harry Potter world for the first time a few years ago and it was AMAZING :) I loved the butterbeer, I loved the castle, I loved everything about it. Good luck with the rest of the semester and congratulations on being one of the last people to graduate with your major!

  21. Hey Tori! It is great to meet you! I am currently in the Indian Epics class for this semester. Congrats on your upcoming graduation! It is such an exciting time! I also can't believe that they are phases out your program from OU. It seems like a really fun and useful major. Anyways, good luck with your last few weeks at OU.

  22. Tori,
Congratulations on being a senior! I hope this last semester has been great for you. I’m sorry to hear about the program being phased out, but lucky you for getting to take it! I also adore Harry Potter. I started watching the movies when I was maybe eight or so and I read the whole series the first time through in sixth grade. I’m a Gryffindor, through and through, but I like to think my second house might be Ravenclaw!

  23. Hi Tori! Congratulations on graduating, I know it is coming up quickly! I totally get the struggle with balancing work and school and family commitments, but it sounds like you have got a pretty good hold on that. I loved reading about your visit to Harry Potter World, I love that series as well and have always wanted to go.

  25. Hey Tori!
I really like the design and layout of your blog and I thought the picture you choose for your introduction complemented your post really well! I am also a huge Harry Potter and the park at Universal Studios is so cool! I hope you are having a great semester so far and I can’t wait to explore the rest of your blog!
