Week 6 Story: The Hippie Life

The Hippie Life
(This story is not recommended for those sensitive to the topic of marijuana use.)
There once was a happy, hippie name Chip. Chip grew up with two hippies for parents. They raised him and Chip's little sister in a house filled with peace and love. He was a naturally calm, chill kinda guy.

One day Chip was hanging out with his friend on her front porch. His friend was smoking marijuanna while the two were sitting there talking. Then she tried convincing Chip to try some. His friend said, "Chip, why don't you just try a little bit?" Chip replied, "I'm alright. I actually have to go soon, so I probably shouldn't." His friend responded, "Oh, come on man. You'll love it once you try it." Chip was not usually one to give into his friends, but he was a little curious about trying it and so he did.

A few minutes later Chip told his friend, "Woah, this is great. I don't know why I haven't tried this before." His friend was nodding her head in agreement.

Both sat there silently on the porch for a while. His friend was sitting there fixing her hair into tiny braids when she said, “Hey, you know what I have always wanted to do?” Chip asked, “What?” “It’s really random, but I have always wanted to open my own hair styling business. Then, I can style and cut hippie hair all day. I love braiding and styling my own hair, so I think I would be good at helping other people with their hair too. Chip responded, “Yeah, that’d be cool. Maybe you could practice by cutting my hair?”

Next thing he knew, she went in the house to get her scissors, and when she got back she began working with Chips hair. As he sat there, he started to worry about how his hair was going to turnout. He started to doze off and he dreamed of many things, especially food, while he was asleep and waiting for her to be done.

After a few hours she was done, Chip felt more handsome than ever. He was really happy how he looked, and so he thanked his friend and told her that he definitely would be back sometime soon to smoke with her and get his styled.
(The Dreaming Hemp-Smoker. Un-Textbook.)
Author's Note: The original story called The Hemp-Smoker's Dream is about a hemp smoker who went to the barber. When he was there getting his hair cut, he dozed off and had crazy dreams. Once the barber was done cutting his hair, he woke up the hemp-smoker from his nap. I got some of my ideas for my story from the original, but I kinda wanted to put a modern, fun twist on the story. That is how I came up with the hippie teenager who is a pot smoker.

  1. Tori, I read this original story too! I loved that you put a modern twist on it. Being "hipster" is such a thing nowadays, and I feel like you captured this stereotype perfectly with your story. This day in age being a pot smoker is becoming much more common with the legalities across the U.S., so this story was fun to read. Good job!

  2. Hi Tori!

Fun story! I loved the modern twist you put on it and how much it relates to the hipster culture we live in. I liked how you gave Chip a short but simple background that was enough to give me a good idea of what he looks like and his personality. The idea to open a barber shop seemed very natural and didn't seem forced at all. Great job and I look forward to reading more from you!

  3. The change from hemp to marijuana makes the story come across much better to modern audiences. Most people, including me, know about marijuana's effects much more than they know about what hemp does to someone.

I do think it would have been interesting to have more about the dreams that Chip had. While I realize that is from the original story, it feels like an extraneous detail in the current story. Even a few sentences about the variety of crazy things he dreamed about would have added something more to the story.
