Reading Notes: Homer's Odyssey, Part A
The Odyssey
1. The Land of the Cyclopes:
-The sun was about to set as the sailors passed the land of the Cyclopes. In the Land of the Cyclopes, there are no laws. They live in caves. There were an excess of goats on the island. The land was perfect: rich and fertile.
-It was too dark too see, and their ship was misguided and the sailors had no sense of direction. Next thing they knew their boat was beached. They could not do anything about it since it was dark, so they lay down and went to sleep

2. Prisoners of the Cyclops
-Odysseus and a few of his men deboarded, while the rest of the men stayed to guard the ship.
-The Cyclops walks into the cave and moves a large boulder in front of the exit to keep others from coming in or leaving; Odysseus and his men were scared when they saw the Cyclops walking toward them.
-The Cyclops asks: who are you strangers? why are you here?
-Trapped: Odysseus introduces himself to the Cyclops as "Nobody"; the Cyclops grabs two of his men and eats them for a snack; the remaining men were trapped in the cave and forced to stay in the cave overnight

3. The Cyclops Defeated: Offering the Cyclops wine
- the Cyclops grabs 2 men and eats them for breakfast; he eats two more for dinner and after this Odysseus offers him some wine to accompany the taste of humans
-the Cyclops loved the wine and drank and drank until he was so drunk he passed out
-Odysseus comes up with a plan and stabs the sleeping Cyclops in the eye, blinding him

4. Escape from the Cyclops
-The Cyclops crawls to the exit and moves the boulder, so his flock of sheep can graze
-Polyphemus sits at the exit to ensure no prisoners escape; he felt the top of each sheep as it left but since he was blind he did not notice that the men were on the underside of the sheep
-they escaped and ran for the boat taking Polyphemus's flock of sheep aboard with them; as they sailed off Odysseus shouted back at Polyphemus and mocked him.

5. Curse of Polyphemus: he prays to Poseidon and asks for him to put a curse on Odysseus for what he has done
6. Circe's Magic
-The men sailed on and came across the Circe's Island; Circe a dark, deceptive goddess; some of the men enter her gates and are lured into her house, but one man resists because he feels it is a trap
- Circe turned them into pigs
- As Odysseus walks toward the house of Circe, Hermes appears to him and tells him how this herb can help him and how to outsmart the goddess and free his men

9. The Death of Elpenor
-Circe told Odysseus to go to the house of hades and there he would speak with Teiresias who will tell you the route for your return home
